Abstract

Effective communication between participants is crucial in cross-cultural design research. However, presenting and conveying abstract concepts accurately and efficiently during communication presents a significant challenge, often leading to misunderstandings and comprehension gaps. This study introduces CrossPic, a generative AI-powered tool designed to address these challenges by identifying abstract concepts in online cross-cultural design communication, such as design terminology and user-described scenarios, and generating illustrative images with textual explanations in real-time. A comparative experiment (n = 20) evaluated CrossPic against traditional methods. The results reveal that CrossPic significantly enhances the accuracy of abstract concept conveyance while improving communication efficiency. Furthermore, the tool demonstrates strong cross-cultural adaptability and usability, along with high participant satisfaction, underscoring its potential for advancing cross-cultural design research.
